January 02, 2010 12:00 AMEarland Walter Bortree Jr., 88, of Gravity Road, Lake Ariel, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 29, at home following an illness. His wife of 63 years is the former Ruth Mittan.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Earland W. Sr. and Mabel Shaffer Bortree.
He was educated in the Lake Ariel School District before enlisting in the U.S. Army. As a waist gunner in the WWII Army Air Corp., he flew aboard the B-17 Flying Fortress Heavy Bomber. He flew 27 combat missions, one being the first daylight air raid over Berlin, Germany.
He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, The Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, The Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, The Air Force Longevity Service Award with five Oak Leaf Clusters and The Good Conduct Medal.
He continued his military career in the United States Air Force with the Strategic Air Command, flying in KC-97 air refueling operations. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant after 21 years of service to his country.
Also surviving are sons, Randy Bortree and his wife, Maureen of Denton, N.C., and David Bortree and his wife, Sheila of Henryville; a daughter, Kathy Zadjura and her husband, Tony of Mount Cobb; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by a brother, Lewis Bortree; and a sister, Fern Sweeny.
There will be a private funeral service at a later date.

JAMES BALSIGER
EMPORIUM - James W. Balsiger, 77, of Vero Beach, Fla., a former resident of Emporium, died Sunday at Indian River Memorial Hospital, Vero Beach, following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 19, 1905, in New Kensington, a son of James and Ann Craig Balsiger. On June 4, 1932, in Emporium, he married Esther Bortree, who died Aug. 28, 1981.
Mr. Balsiger was a retired Pennsylvania State trooper, having been stationed in Emporium and later in Butler. In 1947 he returned to Emporium, where he served as chief of police for eight years, prior to his retirement.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and was a member of Emporium Masonic Lodge 382 F&AM.
Surviving are a son, James B. Balsiger of Vero Beach; a daughter Mrs. Ann Hackett Jr. of St. Marys, five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements under the direction of the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home are incomplete and will be announced.
Memorials to Mr. Balsiger may be made to the Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in St. Marys, or to the Elk County Society for Crippled Children and Adults.

EMPORIUM - Esther B. Balsiger, 73, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and formerly of Emporium, died at Boca Raton, Fla., Community Hospital on Friday.
She was born in Emporium on Dec. 7, 1907, a daughter of Clarence and Olga Extrom Bortree.
On June 4, 1932, in Emporium, she wed James W. Balsiger, who survives.
She lived in Emporium until 1957 when she moved to Florida.
Mrs. Balsiger was a member of Emporium Chapter 101 of the Order of the Eastern Star and of the Mount Zion Lutheran Church of Deerfield Beach.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, James Balsiger of Vero Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Ann Hackett of St. Marys; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Ellen (should be Helen) Putnam of Emporium and Mrs. Pauline Logue (should be Logan) of Silver Springs, Md.
There will be no visitation.
Private committal services will be held in Newton Cemetery, Emporium, at the convenience of the family. The minister will be the Rev. Charles Silkie, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church of Emporium.

Born Dec. 29, 1911, in Emporium, she was the daughter of Clarence and Olga Extrom Bortree.
She was a member of Calvary United Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her husband, James L. "Casey" Russell; two daughters, Mrs. John (Suellen) Moore of Cambridge, Vt., and Mrs. Michael (Patti) Smith of Rockdale, Md; two sons, Jack R. Russell of Evans City and D. Joseph Russell of Butler; nine grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Helen Putnam of Jermyn, Pa.; Mrs. James (Esther) Balsiger of Ft. James L. "Casey" Russell, 81, of Evans City R.D. 2, formerly of 209 W. Wayne St., died at 11:30 a.m. yesterday in the home of his son, Jack R. Russell, after an extended illness.
Mr. Russell was a member of the Butler Sports Hall of Fame, inducted in 1984.
He was a former football player with the Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football League in the late 1930s.
A graduate of Temple University, he was co-captain of the university's first football team to play in the Sugar Bowl, on Jan. 1, 1935. He had also played football at Williamsport High School.
A construction worker, Mr. Russell had worked for various contractors at Armco and Shippingport.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a life member of Butler Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 249, and a member of the Harmony Moose Lodge 957.
Born Aug. 18, 1908, in Sinnamahoning, Cameron County, he was the son of James J. and Nellie Drum Russell.
His wife, Mabel E. Bortree Russell, died Aug. 30, 1972.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. William (Suellen) Monahan of Burlington, Vt., and Mrs. Roger (Patti) Rhinehart of Wheaton, Md.; two sons, Jack R. Russell, with whom he made his home; and D. Joseph Russell of Gaithersburg, Md.; two sisters, Ruth Johnson and Mary Wheaton, both of Queensboro, Ky., a brother, Joseph R. Russell of Pasadena, Caif., and nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.

Obituary of Herbert Allen Peet:
Herbert Allen Peet, 61, of Newfoundland, died Sunday morning, April 11, at his home. He was the husband of JoAnn (Rose) Peet, at home.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of Hazel M. (Freeman) Peet of South Sterling, and the late Stanley R. Peet.Herb was a lifelong resident of the Newfoundland area.
He was a school bus contractor for the Wallenpaupack Area School District since 1975; and co-owned with his son, Herbert R. Peet, the Woodwork Company, a custom millwork shop.
Herb had formerly been employed at Edinger Wyckoff, Stroudsburg; was a co-owner of the Red Barn Printery; had been a real estate salesman from 1968 to 1972; was a sawyer for the Kronick Saw Mill; was a district justice and deputy in Pike County in the 1960s; and was one of the founders of the Greene-Dreher Athletic Association.
Herb was a proficient bluegrass musician and played banjo, mandolin, bass fiddle, fiddle and guitar. He played at festivals throughout the Northeast. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and trapping.
He was a member of the Appalachian Blue Grass Association; a life member of the Good Sam Club, Greene-Dreher Alumni Association, Ducks Unlimited, NRA, Ruffed Grouse Society, and National Sporting Clays Association; and former 20-year member of the Greene-Dreher Volunteer Fire Company. He was former member of the Army National Guard.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by one daughter, Dawn M. Krautter of Newfoundland; three sons, Herbert R. Peet, David L. Peet and Mark R. Peet, all of Newfoundland; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Peet.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 15, at Bible Fellowship Church, Greentown. The Rev. David Johnston will officiate. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, South Sterling.
Friends may call from 2 to - p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, at Arthur J. Frey Funeral Home, Route 191, Village of LaAnna, South Sterling.
Memorial remembrances may be made to the local charity of the donor's choice.
