He was raised on a dairy farm in Sterling Township. He graduated from the Pennsylvania State University in 1939 with a bachelor's degree in dairy husbandry. In 1944, he graduated from Michigan State University with a master's degree in dairy husbandry and a doctorate in veterinary medicine. He was a veterinary professor at Michigan State University Department of Bacteriology from 1944 to 1948. He was a veterinary science professor at the Pennsylvania State University from 1948 until his retirement in 1978. In 1953, the new department of veterinary science was created, and he was named the founding head of the department. He was also the chairman of the division of animal science and industry from 1964 to 1970, and specialized in mastitis research. He was the namesake of the Bortree lecture series, sponsored by the Penn State Department of Veterinary Science, with lectures by nationally known veterinary researchers and speakers. He created the A.L. Bortree Award, an endowed annual scholarship for an outstanding agriculture student going on to veterinary school. He was a member of the State College Rotary since 1957 and was a Paul Harris fellow. He was a member and past president of the Easter Seal Society of Centre-Clinton counties and was instrumental in maintaining Easter Seals in Centre County in the early 1980s. He was a Red Cross volunteer and a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. He was a member and past president of the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association and a member of the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges. He was also a member of the Penn-Allegheny Veterinary Club, the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases, the American Dairy Association and the Penn State Pioneers.

Obituary of Elizabeth E Springer Butler:
Elizabeth "Betty" Butler, 85, of Greentown, formerly of Newfoundland, died Thursday in Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale. She was the widow of Claude "Dutch" Butler, who died Aug. 24, 2001.Born in Kulpsville, Pa., daughter of the late Walter and Elsie Godshall Springer, she lived in Newfoundland before living with her daughter in Greentown. She co-owned and operated the original Dutch's Market in Newfoundland with her husband from 1956 to 1978.
She was a member of the auxiliary of Post 859 American Legion, Newfoundland; an honorary member of the Good Sam Club; and an honorary member of the Rockport Hunting Club, Newfoundland.
Surviving are two daughters, Gail Wasylyk, Greentown; and Carol Provinzano, Dunmore; grandchildren, Robert McCarthy, Clarks Summit; Tammy Wellman, Hornell, N.Y.; Carrie Wasylyk, Blackwood, N.J.; Army Spc. 4th Class James Wasylyk II, Iraq; Rebecca Wasylyk, Greentown; Jason Provinzano, Scranton; and Ryan Provinzano, Throop; seven great-grandchildren and two nephews, Russell Butler and Barry Johnson.
Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the Arthur J. Frey Funeral Home, Route 191, South Sterling. Interment, Moravian Cemetery, Newfoundland. Friends may call Sunday, 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial remembrances may be made to the , 57 North Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre.
