1930 Census, Greene Twp., Pike Co., PA - age 9
From NEagle.com, May 13, 2012:
South Sterling, Pa. —Editor’s note: Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13th. As we honor our mothers or their memory, this story serves to highlight one remarkable Mom. Doris J. Bartelson, South Sterling, will become 92 years of age on Monday.
Doris J. Bartleson was born on May 14,1920, at the Cross Homestead, Crosses Comers, Greentown (1/2 mile north of 1-84, at the intersection of Route 507 and Ledgedale Road), to Minnie Sarah Croft Cross and Howard Alien Cross.
Her paternal grandparents, Thomas Nathan "Nate" and Susanna Bortree Cross operated the Crosses Post Office and the first telephone exchange in Pike County there at Crosses Comers. Bartleson's maternal grandparents were Emmeretta Stevens and George W. T. Croft. The Croft homestead was 1/4 mile south of 1-84 in Greentown, on the hill above Route 507, across from the 1-84 Country Store.
She remembers walking down Bums Hill Road with her father and sister to see the construction of Lake Wallenpaupack, which was completed on November 4,1925. Bartleson was the second of five children. Her sister, Geraldine, and the twins, Albert and Alien, have passed away. Her brother, Calvin, age 84, the youngest, lives in Bechtelsville.
Bartleson has attended banquets of the Greene-Dreher Alumni Association for over 60 years and formerly served as Treasurer. She graduated from Greene-Dreher High School, Class of 1938. She has been an active member of the Hemlock Grove United Methodist Church for 70 years.
She served as Sunday School Teacher at South Sterling Methodist Church, served as Treasurer of the combined parish of South Sterling, LaAnna, and Hemlock Grove Churches, was a former Administrative Board member, and is currently a member of the Wesley Circle and the Quilting Circle.
She served as Democratic Committee Woman and Election Board Inspector for Dreher Township for many years. She is a life member of the Greene-Dreher-Sterling Fair Association and supervised their food stand at the fair for many years. She is a 65- year member and past Secretary and Treasurer of the Community Women's Club, Newfoundland.
Bartleson is a 65-year member and past President and Treasurer of American Legion Auxiliary, Post 859, and Past Matron and 65-year member of the Order of Eastern Star.
After completing all the stations, she was elected Worthy Matron of the chapter in 1951. Her father was Worthy Patron and it was the first time in the history of the chapter and district that a father and daughter held these stations.
She is a member of the Greene-Dreher Historical Society and has donated many treasured items from the Cross, Croft, and Bartleson homesteads. She is also a member of Laurel Blossom Senior Citizens.
During the '50s and early "60s, Doris worked at The Sterling Inn, South Sterling, and was supervisor of Pocono Mountains Plastics, South Sterling. In 1963 she became employed by Weiler Brush Company, Cresco; she worked there for 19 years and retired from the Shipping Department in 1982.
Bartleson and her husband, LeRoy, spent 11 winters in Fort Myers, Florida, and Doris continues to maintain the many lasting friendships they made there. She has lived in her South Sterling home for 67 years. She and LeRoy were married 60 years when he passed away in 2000.
She has strong longevity genes on the Croft side—her Mother lived to be 97 and her Mother's brother, her Uncle Ward Croft, lived to be 104 years of age.
Bartleson still drives her 1997 Mercury Villager van to church, to Senior Citizens, to Historical Society meetings, and Women's Club luncheons. She is well known for her hand-written letters—she corresponds with almost 100 friends and family members at Christmas.
She is a vital and willing participant in a four-generation family with a whirlwind of activity. Doris loves life and lives it to the fullest. She shares the strengths and talents that are uniquely her own. She puts her best into each task and leaves each situation better than she found it. She radiates health, cheerftdness, calm courage, and good will.
