    James R. Gilpin, 85, of South Sterling, died Friday, Nov. 23, in Mercy Hospital, Scranton. He was the husband of Edythe (Grapatin) Gilpin, at home.

    Born in South Sterling, in the home where he lived his 85 years, he was the son of the late Homer L. and Grace (Carlton) Gilpin.

    Jim owned and operated a farm in South Sterling, retiring in 1972. He then worked for Gumble Bros., Newfoundland, until 1981.

    A Dreher Township supervisor from 1950 to 1970, he also served as forest fire warden for 50 years.

    He served his church in South Sterling, and later in LaAnna, as a member of LaAnna United Methodist Church, and its board of trustees. He was a charter member of the Greene-Dreher Volunteer Fire Company; and member of the board of directors of Pine Grove Cemetery.

    In addition to his wife of 61 years, he is survived by one son, James M. Gilpin, and his wife Janet, of South Sterling; two granddaughters, Christa Gilpin and Deidra Gilpin, both of South Sterling; one sister, Dorothy G. Hughes of Lancaster; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Earl; three sisters, Estella Christman, Harriet Waltz, and Merle Hackman; and one granddaughter, December Rose Gilpin.

    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at Arthur J. Frey Funeral Home, Route 191, LaAnna, South Sterling. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, South Sterling.

    Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, at the funeral home.

    Memorial remembrances may be made to LaAnna United Methodist Church, Newfoundland Area Ambulance Association, or the Greene-Dreher Volunteer Fire Company.
